SR-207 Road Conditions: Carson Valley to South Lake Tahoe over Kingsbury Grade

Traveler’s Checklist:

1. Check current Live Webcams for summit visibility.
2. Verify road status for Kingsbury Grade before departing the valley.
3. Confirm your emergency kit is stocked for high-altitude mountain driving.

SR-207 Road Conditions & Kingsbury Grade Travel Guide

State Route 207 (SR-207), locally known as Kingsbury Grade, is a vital mountain pass connecting U.S. Route 50 at Stateline, Nevada (near South Lake Tahoe) to Nevada State Route 88 in the Carson Valley (Gardnerville and Minden). As a critical connector ascending over Daggett Pass at an elevation of 7,334 feet, this route is highly susceptible to extreme winter weather, swift temperature drops, and rapid ice accumulation. Travelers relying on this steep, winding corridor must monitor real-time road conditions, chain control requirements, and active weather advisories to ensure safe travel.

Navigating Daggett Pass Safely

Daggett Pass represents the highest point of SR-207 and is the primary geographical challenge of the route. The grade features steep mountain climbs with inclines averaging around 6% to 8%, paired with sharp, descending switchbacks on the Carson Valley side.

During Sierra winter storms, cold air from the Great Basin frequently creates icy, slick pavement over Daggett Pass, triggering immediate chain control operations by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Caltrans.

• Prepare for Steep Descents: The eastern slope of Kingsbury Grade drops dramatically into the Carson Valley. Drivers must use low gears to preserve braking power and maintain vehicle control on icy descents.
• Carry Chains and Traction Devices: Even if your vehicle is equipped with four-wheel drive or snow tires, Nevada law requires all vehicles to carry snow chains or cables when traversing mountain passes under active winter controls.
• Watch for Changing Weather: Conditions in the Carson Valley at 4,700 feet are often mild, but the summit at 7,334 feet can experience zero-visibility blizzard conditions simultaneously. Always check the summit cameras before climbing.

Key Traffic Generators and Congestion Points

SR-207 is a highly trafficked commuter and tourism route, acting as a shortcut for workers and visitors moving between Lake Tahoe's casinos and resorts and the Carson Valley residential communities.

Stateline Resort and Casino Corridor

At its western terminus, Kingsbury Grade feeds directly into the busy South Lake Tahoe casino district. During peak ski weekends, summer holidays, and major outdoor concert events, the intersection of US-50 and Kingsbury Grade experience significant bottlenecking as vehicles filter off the pass and onto the main lake-level highway.

Heavenly Mountain Resort Access

Located near the summit of Kingsbury Grade, the Stagecoach and Boulder lodges of Heavenly Mountain Resort generate massive traffic. Skiers and snowboarders flock up the grade early in the morning on weekends (typically between 7:30 AM and 10:00 AM) and descend in the late afternoon (between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM), causing slow-moving queues along the upper sections of the route.

Carson Valley Commuter Flow

Because of the elevation change and desirable housing in Gardnerville, Minden, and Carson City, SR-207 sees heavy daily commuter traffic. Morning westbound climbs (toward the lake) and afternoon eastbound descents (toward the valley) can be slow, especially when weather conditions require reduced speeds.

NDOT Chain Control Requirements Explained

When severe winter weather conditions develop on Daggett Pass, NDOT enforces structured traction requirements. Knowing these terms keeps you safe and legal:

1. Chains Required (CS): Traction devices, such as snow chains or cables, are required on all vehicles except those with four-wheel or all-wheel drive and snow-rated tires on all four wheels.
2. Chains Required on All Vehicles (CA): All vehicles must be equipped with traction devices. There are absolutely no exceptions for four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles in this tier.
3. Road Closed: If winter conditions make plowing impossible or if multiple spin-outs occur on the steep switchbacks, NDOT will temporarily close Kingsbury Grade to clear the lanes.

Essential Summer Travel and Wildfire Awareness on SR-207

While winter snow is the most obvious hazard, summer travel along Kingsbury Grade requires alertness to regional wildfire risks and active construction delays. The heavily forested mountain slopes of Daggett Pass are exceptionally vulnerable during dry seasonal months.

Always stay informed of active fire restrictions and keep track of emergency evacuation routes. In addition, NDOT and utility crews frequently utilize the dry summer window for pavement preservation, slope stabilization, and tree removal, resulting in single-lane traffic controls and minor delays.
